Different Types of Foundations
by Lee Ann Buttery

If you long for smoother, more even-toned looking skin, then your best bet is choosing the right foundation. Well, wonder no further because Iíve dished out each kind of foundation and their specific function. If you long for smoother, more even-toned looking skin, then your best bet is choosing the right foundation. Oh, Iím sure youíve seen Ďem all, but you may not be too sure what type of foundation is best for you. Well, wonder no further because Iíve dished out each kind of foundation and their specific ďfunction.Ē

Tinted Moisturizers

Not exactly a foundation per se, but tinted moisturizers are great for people who are blessed with, well, great skin. It provides very minimum coverage, but itís a good alternative to mainstream foundation, as it delivers a hint of color and extra warmth. Many tinted moisturizers also come with SPF, so it serves as a substitute for foundation when youíre heading out to places like the beach. Try Stila Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer ($30).

Stick Foundation

Stick foundation is cream foundation in a stick form and usually packaged in a lipstick-looking tube. I actually recently found this out: the stick formula is a foundation and concealer combined, so itís best for women who want to conceal imperfections. The only downside to this type of foundation is that it can feel a bit cakey on the skin and itís most suitable for normal to dry skin types, not oily. Thinking about trying this kind? I recommend Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick ($40).

Liquid

Most women use this form of foundation. It works well for almost any skin type and it delivers medium coverage. Most liquid foundations are oil-free, which is more of an incentive to use it. Right now Iím a big fan of Almay Clear Complexion Makeup ($25).

Cream

This type is a thick texture and is best for drier skin types. It imparts maximum coverage, yet it wonít feel too heavy on your skin. Try using Laura Mercier Silk CrŤme Foundation ($42).

Mousse

Most ideal for dry to mature skin types, the consistency of mousse foundation is mousse-like and is often packed in a small jar. It delivers medium to full coverage, but doesnít feel as heavy as the creamy formulas. Wanna mousse up your face? Then go for Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Mousse Makeup ($30).

Powder Foundation

This is the kind Iím currently taking a break from. Although I am quite content with my Cover Girl powder-foundation, I needed to get out of my little makeup rut and try something different. This type of foundation is basically just pressed powder with some foundation, therefore it only offers light to medium coverage. It comes in a compact form, just like pressed powder, so be sure not to confuse the two (which Iíve done a couple of times).

Cream-to-Powder

The purpose of this two-in-one foundation is so you wonít have to finish off your face with pressed or loose powder. It applies as a creamy formula, but dries like a pressed powder. Hey, it does save you the extra time. Oily skin types can use this as it provides medium to full coverage, leaving a smoother finish. I personally like Smashbox Conversion Cream to Powder Foundation ($32).

Mineral

Not only is this loose-powder formula beneficial for your skin due to its minerals and vitamins, it delivers medium to full coverage and leaves your skin looking more radiant. And the cool thing about this type of foundation is that it feels like youíre not even wearing makeup. So try Bare Escentuals bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation ($25).

Iíve noticed that many women with acne and other skin problems tend to shy away from makeup, fearing it will only worsen their condition. I wish I could just tell them that that is far from the case (well, if I knew them personally, I would). The good news is, foundation has improved over the past 20 years, and oil-free, hypoallergenic makeup has been on the market for quite some time now. Thereís really no reason not to use it. So, if you have less than mediocre skin, foundation can be your new best friend because it will hide those flaws and provide a smoother, even-toned looking complexion.

no problem. I have tinted moisturizer, liquid, stick, powder, and creme-to-powder foundations, because I like to pick different finishes on different days. I don't like being limited to one. I tried the maybelline mineral foundation, and it would have been great had it been my tone - it was way too dark.

hopefully you find what you're looking for. I remembered you asking about finishes, so I figured I'd go ahead and post this, since no one was really giving you advice you could use. Lee Ann said it better than any of us could.

sounds like loose powder. use a fluffy brush. if its pressed, you can use the applicator. but use a medium sized brush, then use the applicator to get to hard to reach spots, like the corners of your nose and under your eyes.
